An old hunter moved to a new area. He got lost in the woods several times. A friend advised him to buy a pocket compass and explained how to use it. However, the hunter soon got lost again and could not find his way out.
When he was finally found and asked why he hadn't used the compass, he replied, "It was very difficult to manage. I wanted to go north, so I tried hard to make the needle point north. But it was no use. It would shake, spin right around, and point southeast every time."
