Once upon a time, a kind old woman lived in a little house with a garden. In her garden was a bed of beautiful trumpet lilies.
One night, she was awakened by the sound of sweet singing and babies laughing. She looked out the window towards the lily bed, but saw nothing.
The next morning, she found no signs of anyone having been there.
The following night, she heard the sounds again. She walked softly to her garden. The moon shone brightly on the lily bed, and the flowers were swaying to and fro. Looking closely, she saw a little Fairy mother standing by each lily, singing and rocking the flower like a cradle. Inside each lily trumpet lay a little Fairy baby, laughing and playing.
The old woman quietly returned to her house. From then on, she never picked a lily, nor allowed her neighbors to touch them.
The lilies grew brighter in color and larger in size, giving off a delicious perfume like roses. They began to bloom all year round.
When the good old woman eventually died, the lily bed was torn up and other plants were put in its place. However, they all withered, and nothing would grow there again.
But the old woman's grave became beautiful. The Fairies sang above it, keeping it green. Lilies, tulips, violets, and other lovely spring flowers sprang up on and around her grave.
