One day, the Jade Emperor invited Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equalling Heaven, to Heaven and tasked him with overseeing the Peach Orchard. The Great Sage was overjoyed, for the ripened peaches granted immortality to those who ate them. He would often pick the finest peaches for himself, and after feasting, he would shrink to a mere two inches and nap on a tree branch.
One day, the Queen Mother arranged a grand Peach Banquet by the Jade Pool. When her fairies arrived to pick peaches, they awoke the Great Sage. Annoyed at not being invited, he immobilized the fairies with a spell and headed straight for the Jade Pool. There, he found rare delicacies and smelled the fragrance of celestial wine. He plucked hairs from his body, chewed them, and transformed them into sleep-inducing insects that bit all the busy servants, causing them to fall asleep. The Great Sage then indulged in the feast, eating and drinking to his heart's content. He packed the leftovers into a large bag to take back to his monkey subjects on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit.
Afterwards, he went to Lord Lao Zi's abode, where he found and consumed all the golden elixir pills from a precious gourd. Finally, he rushed out of the Gate of Heaven and returned directly to his mountain home.
