The Man Who Choked | 因噎废食

点击查看中英对照 收藏文章

In the past, there was a man with a large appetite who ate his food ravenously.

Once, he was not careful, and a fishbone got stuck in his throat. The food was blocked in his esophagus, and he could neither swallow nor vomit. He called a physician, but the physician could do nothing. The people around looked on in anxiety. Finally, unable to breathe, he died of choking.

Afterwards, someone went so far as to issue a ban: "Eating is forbidden from today onward, for if people give up eating, no one will ever be choked to death."
