This is a story from Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio.
Lady Fan was gentle and beautiful. One day, while on an outing to the Water and Moon Monastery with her attendant, she met the equally warm and beautiful Lady Feng. Finding an immediate affinity, Lady Fan invited Lady Feng to visit her home before they parted. Back home, Lady Fan missed her new friend terribly and soon fell ill.
On the Double Ninth Festival, Lady Fan went to her family garden to enjoy the flowers. There, she saw Lady Feng looking at her from outside the garden wall. Overjoyed, she was also introduced by Lady Feng to Meng Anren, a handsome and talented but impoverished young scholar.
With Lady Feng's help, Lady Fan and the scholar became betrothed. Unfortunately, a wealthy local bully also desired Lady Fan and forced a marriage proposal upon her parents, who felt compelled to accept. The day before the wedding, Lady Fan hanged herself in despair.
Heartbroken, the young scholar rushed to her tomb and wailed uncontrollably. Suddenly, he heard Lady Feng's voice behind him: "If you open the tomb, I can bring her back to life." He did as instructed and carried Lady Fan's body back to his home. With Lady Feng's magical medicine, Lady Fan was revived, and the two lovers were finally married. Before departing, Lady Feng revealed her true identity—a fox fairy.
