A farmer was trapped in his farmstead by a severe snowstorm and could not go out to procure provisions for his family. First, he killed his sheep for food. As the storm persisted, he then killed his goats. Finally, with no sign of improvement in the weather, he was compelled to kill his oxen. Seeing the various animals being killed and eaten in turn, the dogs said to one another, "We had better get out of here, or we shall be the next!"
