It was hectic in the Jenson household the day before New Year's Eve. They were preparing to travel from London to England to celebrate with extended family. Francesca (Franny) and Samantha (Sam) were finishing their packing whilst Michael (Mick) loaded the car.
They were staying with Barbara's (Babs's) sister, Louesha, in her large 16-bedroom house. The girls were excited to see their cousins: Becky, Louise, Phiona, Debbie, and Amanda. Mick, Babs's friend, and his son Peter (Podge) were also joining. Podge was particularly eager to meet Simon, a cousin his own age.
Packing was a struggle. Franny was annoyed at leaving makeup behind, and Sam was upset she couldn't bring her slingshot or filthy old trainers. After some bickering, they finally loaded up. In the car, Franny read a magazine, Sam listened to music, and Podge played Gameboy until he fell asleep.
During the journey, the sisters chatted excitedly about reuniting with their cousins and sharing gossip.
They arrived first at Aunt Louesha's. After tea, other family members trickled in throughout the afternoon. The final arrivals were Grandpa Timothy with Simon and baby Hannah. Once everyone was there, Aunt Louesha laid down house rules in the lounge.
The kids settled into their shared rooms. That evening, they entertained themselves with videos, manicures, and games until they unpacked and chatted themselves to sleep.
The next day, after breakfast, the groups split up: some went shopping, others checked their secret treehouse, and Podge and Simon played video games. Everyone regrouped for tea, though the treehouse group was late and scolded.
An evening garden party preceded the midnight fireworks. As Uncle Oliver lit the display, Podge ran too close. A firework grazed his finger, causing a panic. He was rushed to casualty by Mick, Babs, and Grandpa Frank.
After the shock, the exhausted children gradually went to bed. The next morning at breakfast, Podge returned with a bandaged hand. After a few hours, goodbyes were said, and the families parted, already looking forward to next New Year's Eve.
