This happened many summers ago.
There was a young flower in the desert where all was dry and sad-looking. It grew by itself, enjoying each day.
She asked the sun, "When shall I be grown up?" The sun would reply, "Be patient. Each time I touch you, you grow a little."
She was pleased, for she would have a chance to bring beauty to this corner of sand. That was all she wanted to do—bring a little bit of beauty to this world.
One day, a hunter came by and stepped on her.
She was dying and felt so sad. Not because she was dying, but because she would not have a chance to bring beauty to this corner of the desert.
The Great Spirit saw her and listened. "She should be living," he said. He reached down, touched her, and gave her life.
She grew into a beautiful flower, and because of her, that corner of the desert became beautiful.
