Between Jizhou in the south and Heyang in the north stood two towering mountains: Taihang Mountain and Wangwu Mountain.
To the north of these mountains lived an old man named Yu Gong, nearly ninety years old. With the mountains blocking his path, he and his family had to take long detours whenever they needed to go to the other side.
One day, Yu Gong gathered his family to discuss moving the mountains. His wife objected, "You are too old to move even a small hill, let alone two great mountains. And where would you put all the earth and stone?"
"The Bohai Sea is vast enough to hold it all," Yu Gong replied. The decision was made. Led by Yu Gong, his family began to dig.
A wise man named Zhi Sou saw them and laughed, "How foolish! You are too old and weak to clear the grass. How can you move mountains?"
Yu Gong sighed and said, "You are mistaken. My sons will continue after me, and their sons after them. Generations will carry on without end, but the mountains will not grow. How can we not move them?"
Upon learning of this, the Heavenly God was deeply moved. He sent another god to carry the two mountains away.
This story teaches us that with unwavering determination and persistence, no obstacle is too great to overcome.
