This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Zhang Lu ordered Ma Chao to attack Jiameng Pass. Learning this, Liu Bei immediately consulted his military advisor Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang remarked, "Ma Chao is exceptionally brave; only Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun could match him. However, Zhao Yun is away, leaving only Zhang Fei available."
Upon hearing of Ma Chao's attack, Zhang Fei eagerly requested to fight him. Zhuge Liang, pretending not to hear, said to Liu Bei, "Ma Chao is attacking, and only Zhao Yun can defeat him." Feeling snubbed, Zhang Fei listed his past merits and vowed, "If I cannot defeat Ma Chao, I will accept any punishment." Only then did Zhuge Liang agree.
Liu Bei took command and appointed Zhang Fei as the vanguard. When they reached the pass, Ma Chao repeatedly challenged them to battle. Each time, Zhang Fei wanted to engage, but Liu Bei held him back. After observing that Ma Chao and his troops were fatigued, Liu Bei finally ordered Zhang Fei to fight.
Zhang Fei and Ma Chao fought a hundred rounds to a draw. As darkness fell, Liu Bei suggested resuming the fight the next day. Infuriated, Zhang Fei shouted, "Light more torches! Prepare for a night battle! I will not return until I defeat Ma Chao!" Ma Chao also pledged not to return to his camp without victory. They mounted fresh horses and continued fighting.
After another twenty rounds, Ma Chao realized he could not win by force alone. He pretended to flee. At that moment, Zhuge Liang arrived. He analyzed Ma Chao's situation, laid a trap, and ultimately sent an envoy who successfully persuaded Ma Chao to join Liu Bei's cause.
