Chapter 1
Once upon a time, there were two children named Jesse and Mary Sue. Their parents had divorced years ago, and their father was now seeing a woman who was cruel to them behind his back. She threatened to make their lives miserable if she married their father.
One day, their father called them into his room and announced, "I'm getting married." Shocked, Jesse protested, "Father, you can't! It'll ruin our family tree!" Their father replied, "I'm sorry, kids, but I love her." Before he could say more, the children ran out of the house, slamming the door behind them.
Chapter 2
After walking for a while, they found themselves in an unfamiliar part of the neighborhood. They had stumbled into a magical land filled with fairies as beautiful as princesses, birds with rainbow-colored feathers, all kinds of animals, and beautiful butterflies—a place they thought existed only in fairy tale books.
Night fell, and they fell asleep on a rock. In the morning, they awoke to find the animals lying beside them. The creatures asked how they had arrived. The children explained they had run away because they were upset about their father's impending marriage to a woman they disliked. The animals were delighted to have new playmates.
They were then introduced to the fairy princess, Patty, also called "Patty the Pooh" by her father, the fairy king. She had short blonde hair, a golden crown, and a princess outfit. Patty shared the good news that a fairy was expecting a baby. The next morning, the baby was born and named Julia. By the time Julia turned one and could walk, Jesse and Mary Sue were still there. As they prepared to leave on a Saturday, they heard a familiar voice and decided to stay one more night.
Chapter 3
Early the next morning, they heard the voice again. Julia, who loved adventures, joined them as they followed the sound to a cave. Peeking inside, Jesse and Mary Sue were stunned to see their stepmother talking to someone. Julia identified the other figure as a demon.
Julia explained that the demon had a son who would follow in his evil footsteps. Years ago, the demon had lost a challenge for the land and was banished. Puzzled, Jesse wondered why their stepmother would be speaking with him, suggesting she might be a demon too. Julia doubted that but noted that no one knew who the little demon's mother was. "We have to get home and warn Daddy," Mary Sue said.
