The Quarrel of the Charms | 符艾相争

点击查看中英对照 收藏文章

One day, the peachwood charm against evil, hanging on the door, looked up and cursed the figure made of Chinese mugwort: "Who do you think you are, daring to place yourself above me?"

The mugwort figure, unwilling to be outdone, looked down and retorted: "It is summer now. You have only half a year left and won't live long. Why squabble over who is higher or lower?"

Beside itself with rage, the peachwood charm answered back sarcastically. Both sides refused to yield, trading endless streams of abuse.

At that moment, the door deity came to mediate: "It is only because we lack ability that we must attach ourselves to another's door. What is the point in quarreling with each other?"
