There was a man in the state of Chu who was terrified of ghosts.
A thief, learning of this fear, climbed onto the wall of the man's courtyard at night and mimicked the cries of a ghost. He was delighted to see that the homeowner, as expected, was too afraid to even look outside. After repeating this act for four or five nights, the thief sneaked into the house and stole all the valuables.
Not long after, strange occurrences (which the man believed to be ghosts) began again in his house. Although his missing belongings were later found in the thief's home, the man stubbornly insisted that ghosts had stolen them and then given them to the thief, refusing to believe the man was a thief.
