A state police officer, stationed by the highway to catch speeders, observed a car moving at a mere 22 MPH. Thinking, "This driver is as hazardous as a speeder!" he activated his lights and pulled the vehicle over.
Approaching the car, he saw five elderly ladies inside—two in front, three in back—their eyes wide with fear.
The confused driver said, "Officer, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What's the problem?"
"Ma'am," he replied, "you weren't speeding, but driving too slowly can also be dangerous."
"Slower than the limit?" she questioned. "No, sir! I was doing the speed limit exactly: twenty-two miles per hour!" she stated proudly.
The officer, stifling a chuckle, explained that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit. Slightly embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked him.
"Before you go," the officer added, "is everyone alright? Your passengers seem terribly shaken and haven't made a sound."
"Oh, they'll be fine in a minute, officer," she answered. "We just got off Route 119."
