We've all done it. Run upstairs to get your keys, but forget what you're looking for once you reach the bedroom. Open the fridge door and reach for the middle shelf, only to realize you can't remember why you opened it in the first place. Or wait for a moment to interrupt a friend, only to find that the burning issue has vanished from your mind just as you start to speak: "What did I want to say again?" you ask a confused audience.
Although these errors can be embarrassing, they are also common. This phenomenon is known as the "Doorway Effect", and it reveals important features of how our minds are organized.
