Dogedog was a lazy man who lived poorly in a small, floorless house after his parents died. He preferred idleness to work.
As the rainy season approached, he decided to build a floor. Taking rice wrapped in a leaf to the forest, he hung it in a tree while cutting bamboo. A cat ate it. This happened again the next day. On the third day, Dogedog set a trap and caught the cat.
"I'll kill you for stealing my rice!" he cried.
"Spare me," pleaded the cat, "and I will be useful to you."
Dogedog spared the cat, tied it near his door as a guard, and later found it had transformed into a rooster. Delighted, he abandoned his floor plans and set off for the cock-fights at Magsingal.
On the way, he was joined by an alligator, a deer, an ant mound, and a monkey. Each boasted of a special skill: diving, running, wrestling, and climbing.
At Magsingal, Dogedog's rooster, which fought like a cat with its claws, defeated every other bird. The people then proposed contests against Dogedog's companions: a diving man vs. the alligator, a runner vs. the deer, a wrestler vs. the mound, and a climber vs. the monkey. Dogedog's companions won every match.
Dogedog won so much silver he needed two horses to carry it home. He bought a rich man's house and lived happily ever after, never having to work again.
