English Original
A girl from Brakel went to St. Anne's Chapel at the foot of the Hinnenberg. Wishing for a husband and believing herself alone, she sang a prayer:
"Oh, holy Saint Anne!\
Help me soon to a man.\
Thou know'st him right well,\
By Suttmer gate does he dwell,\
His hair it is golden,\
Thou know'st him right well."
However, the clerk was standing behind the altar and heard her. In a gruff voice, he cried, "Thou shalt not have him! Thou shalt not have him!"
The maiden thought it was the child Mary, standing by her mother Anne, who had spoken. Angered, she cried back, "Fiddle de dee, conceited thing, hold your tongue, and let your mother speak!"
