Zeng Zi saw Zi Xia and asked him, "Why have you gained weight?"
Zi Xia replied, "I have won a victory, and that is why I have gained weight."
"What victory do you refer to?" Zeng Zi inquired.
Zi Xia explained, "When I immersed myself in reading, I revered the principles of the ancient emperors and sages. When I went out, I admired the pleasures of a wealthy life. A battle raged between these two desires in my mind, and they were evenly matched. This inner conflict left me emaciated. Now, the principles of the ancient sages have prevailed. My mind has grown increasingly peaceful, and so I have gained weight."

曾子见到子夏，问道：“你怎么胖了？”
子夏回答说：“我赢得了一场胜利，所以胖了。”
曾子追问：“你指的是什么胜利？”
子夏解释道：“当我埋头读书时，我敬仰古代先王圣贤的道理。当我出门在外时，我又羡慕富贵享乐的生活。这两种欲望在我心中激烈交战，难分胜负。这种内心的冲突使我变得瘦弱。如今，古代圣贤的道理取得了胜利。我的内心日益安宁，所以人就胖了起来。”
