Dogs Barking at Snow in Guangdong |

English Original

I once heard a saying: "In the southern region where Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Hubei meet, the weather was often overcast and drizzly for days on end, with very few clear days. On the rare occasion when the sun appeared, the dogs would bark incessantly."

I never quite believed this tale, considering it an exaggeration.

Six or seven years ago, I traveled south. The following winter, a heavy snow—rarely seen before—fell. It crossed the Nanling Mountains and blanketed several counties in southern Guangdong. Consequently, the dogs in these areas were thrown into a panic. For days, they barked wildly and ran about in confusion. Only when the skies cleared and the snow melted did they finally quiet down.

It was then that I came to believe the story about dogs in Sichuan barking at the sun.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with the sun rising or snow falling. The dogs simply found these phenomena strange due to their lack of experience!
