A few years before the Gulf War, Barbara Walters reported on gender roles in Kuwait. She noted that, in line with traditional Islamic custom, women typically walked about ten feet behind their husbands.
Recently, Barbara returned to Kuwait and observed that men now walked several yards behind their wives. She approached a Kuwaiti woman for an explanation.
"This is marvelous," Barbara said. "What enabled women here to achieve this reversal of roles?"
The Kuwaiti woman replied, "Land mines."
