Little Briar-Rose |

English Original

A long time ago, a King and Queen longed for a child. One day, a frog promised the Queen she would have a daughter within a year. The promise came true, and a beautiful princess was born.

The King held a grand feast and invited twelve Wise Women to bestow blessings upon the child. However, he had only twelve golden plates, so the thirteenth Wise Woman was not invited. At the feast, the first eleven bestowed gifts like virtue, beauty, and riches.

Suddenly, the uninvited thirteenth Wise Woman appeared. Seeking revenge, she cursed the princess: "On her fifteenth birthday, she shall prick her finger on a spindle and die!"

Before she left, the twelfth Wise Woman, who had not yet given her gift, softened the curse: "She shall not die, but fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years."

To protect his daughter, the King ordered all spindles in the kingdom to be burned. The princess, named Briar-Rose, grew up to be kind, wise, and beloved by all.

On her fifteenth birthday, while her parents were away, Briar-Rose explored the palace and found an old tower. Inside, an old woman was spinning with a spindle. Curious, the princess took the spindle, pricked her finger, and immediately fell into a deep sleep.

Her sleep spread throughout the entire castle. The King, Queen, court, servants, and even the animals fell asleep. A great hedge of thorns grew around the castle, hiding it from view.

Over the years, many princes tried to penetrate the thorny hedge but failed and died.

After a hundred years, a prince arrived. The thorns had turned into beautiful flowers that parted for him. He found the entire castle asleep. He climbed the tower, found the sleeping Briar-Rose, and kissed her.

The princess awoke, and with her, the entire castle woke up. Life resumed instantly. The prince and Briar-Rose were married and lived happily ever after.
