English Original
In a temple stood two clay idols. On the left was the idol of Tai Shang Lao Jun, founder of Taoism, and on the right was the idol of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism.
One day, a monk saw them and was displeased. "The power of Buddha is infinite," he said. "How can we allow Sakyamuni to be placed on the right of Tai Shang Lao Jun?" So, he moved the Buddhist idol to the left.
Shortly after, a Taoist priest arrived. Seeing the new arrangement, he felt offended. "Our Taoist doctrine is supreme," he declared. "How can we allow our idol to be on the right?" He promptly moved the Taoist idol to the left.
Thus, the monk and the priest kept moving the idols back and forth until, in the end, both were broken into pieces.
