Zhao Xiangzi had been learning chariot driving from Wang Yuqi.
Before long, Zhao Xiangzi challenged Wang Yuqi to a contest. Zhao Xiangzi changed horses three times and lost all three races. He then reproached Wang Yuqi for not having taught him all the techniques.
Wang Yuqi said, "The most important thing in driving a chariot is to coordinate the horse with the chariot and focus all your attention on controlling the horse. When you lagged behind, you were only thinking of catching up with me. When you were in the lead, you were afraid I would catch up. In any race, someone is ahead and someone is behind. If you focus all your attention on me, how can you control your horse well? That is why you lost."
