Lorenzo Dow, a 19th-century evangelist, arrived in a small town on a bitterly cold winter night during a preaching tour. Seeking warmth, he entered the local general store, where he found the town's lawyers gathered around a pot-bellied stove, deep in discussion. None offered him a place by the fire.
Dow introduced himself and mentioned he had recently experienced a vision—a tour of Hell, reminiscent of Dante's Inferno. When one lawyer inquired what he had seen, Dow replied, "Much the same as I see here: all the lawyers, gathered in the hottest place."
