The Stag and the Vine |

English Original

A stag, pursued by hunters, hid under the cover of a thick vine. The hunters lost track of him and passed by without noticing his hiding place. Believing the danger had passed, the stag began to browse on the leaves of the vine. The movement caught the attention of the returning hunters. One of them, suspecting an animal was hidden there, shot an arrow into the foliage. The unlucky stag was pierced through the heart. As he died, he said, "I deserve my fate for my treachery in feeding upon the leaves of my protector."
