The Frog in the Well | 井蛙之乐

English Original

A frog lived in a shallow well.

One day, it met a large soft-shelled turtle from the sea beside the well.

The frog bragged to the turtle: "Look how happy I am here! When I'm glad, I bounce near the well. When tired, I rest in the brick hole. Sometimes I soak in the water, showing only my head. Sometimes I stroll in the soft, comfortable mud. None of the tiny crabs or tadpoles can compare with me. I am the master here, free and unrestrained. Why don't you come play in the well more often?"

Hearing this, the turtle was itching to look inside. But as he tried to enter, his foot got stuck. He quickly retreated and told the frog about the sea: "Have you seen the sea? It is vast, over a thousand li wide, and deep, over a thousand zhang. In ancient times, floods came nine years in ten, yet the sea's water rose little. Later, droughts struck seven years in eight, yet the sea's water dropped little. Neither great floods nor droughts affect the sea. Only there can one find true happiness!"

Amazed by the turtle's words, the frog was left speechless.
