This happened a long, long time ago. Humans had big ears then, which would flap in the wind.
Their ears were so large that they found many uses for them. Sometimes they would lie down on one ear, using it as a mattress. Other times, they would cover themselves with the other ear as a warm and soft blanket. The ears were very useful: humans could hear exceptionally well, stay warm, and even flap away flies.
One day, a terrible event occurred. God was out hunting and shot what he thought was an animal with his arrow. A scream came from where the arrow landed—it did not sound like an animal at all. God rushed to the spot and was horrified.
Before him lay an injured human. God had mistaken the man for an animal, fooled by the big ears. He was deeply saddened, as he never intended to harm a human. To ensure he would never make such a mistake again, God decided to act.
To make amends, God cut off the man's big ears and then brought him back to life. Since that day, humans have had small ears. Now, humans cannot hear as well as many animals, they need blankets to stay warm, and, most of all, they can no longer flap a fly away.
