The Trial of the Brides |

English Original

There was once a young shepherd who wished to marry. He was acquainted with three sisters who were all equally pretty, making it difficult for him to choose.

He asked his mother for advice. She said, "Invite all three, set some cheese before them, and watch how they eat it."

The youth did so. The first sister swallowed the cheese with the rind on. The second hastily cut off the rind but wasted much good cheese with it. The third peeled the rind off carefully, cutting neither too much nor too little.

The shepherd told his mother, who said, "Take the third for your wife." He did so and lived contentedly and happily with her.
