The Quail Mocks the Roc |

English Original

As legend has it, in the vast open lands of ancient northern China, there lived a gigantic bird known as the roc.

The roc was immense, with a back like a great mountain and wings like clouds that could blot out the sky. When it spread its wings, it could break through storms and soar ninety thousand li high, flying towards the southern sea.

A small quail, hopping freely and happily on the ground, looked up at the roc soaring in the sky and couldn't help but laugh.

"Hey, look how proud you are! See me? One leap takes me over ten chi. How delightful! Every day, I come and go freely among these weeds and thickets. Don't I fly quite well too? But you, where can you possibly fly to?"
