A postal worker whose job was to handle mail with illegible addresses one day received a letter shakily addressed to God. Out of curiosity, he opened it.
Dear God,
I am an 83-year-old widow living on a meager pension. Yesterday, my purse with $100—all my money until my next check—was stolen. I've invited two friends for Christmas dinner but now have nothing to buy food. With no family to turn to, you are my only hope. Can you please help me?
Sincerely,
Edna
Touched, the worker shared the letter with his colleagues. Each contributed a few dollars, and together they collected $96, which they sent to Edna in an envelope. For the rest of the day, the workers felt a warm glow imagining her Christmas dinner.
After Christmas, another letter arrived from Edna addressed to God. The workers gathered as it was opened.
Dear God,
How can I ever thank you enough? Your loving gift allowed me to prepare a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a wonderful day, and I shared the story of your generosity. By the way, $4 was missing. I suspect it was those thieving bastards at the Post Office.
