The City Mouse and the Country Mouse |

English Original

The City Mouse visited his old friend, the Country Mouse, in the countryside. They were overjoyed to see each other after a long time.

At the Country Mouse's small, old house, the City Mouse was shocked. "My goodness! How can you live here?"

"It's quiet and cozy," replied the Country Mouse happily. He then served dry bread and corn for lunch.

The City Mouse was appalled. "You must be kidding! I eat cakes and cookies every day in the city."

Intrigued, the Country Mouse accepted an invitation to visit the city immediately.

In the city, the Country Mouse marveled at the tall buildings and bright lights. The City Mouse's red brick house was big and beautiful.

In the kitchen, a feast awaited: chocolate cake, butter cookies, and cheese. But the City Mouse warned, "Stop! That's a mousetrap."

As they ate, danger arrived. First, the dog Old Yellow sniffed and barked around the table. They hid until he was called away.

"How can you live here?" gasped the Country Mouse.

"You just have to be careful," said the City Mouse, offering more cookies.

Suddenly, the cat Fluffy appeared. "Meow, I smell mice!"

"Run for your life!" cried the City Mouse. They barely escaped into a mousehole, out of breath.

"It's too dangerous here!" said the Country Mouse. "I'm going home to my dry bread and corn."

"But they taste terrible," said the City Mouse.

"Perhaps," replied the Country Mouse. "But there are no trucks, dogs, or cats in the country."

Moral: Peace of mind is more important than material comfort.
