A farmer had a faithful old dog named Sultan, who had lost all his teeth. One day, the farmer told his wife he intended to shoot Sultan, as the dog was no longer useful. His wife pleaded for mercy, citing the dog's long service, but the farmer insisted.
Sultan, overhearing this, was distressed. He sought help from his friend, the wolf. The wolf devised a plan: the next day, when the farmer and his wife took their child to the fields, Sultan would pretend to guard the child. The wolf would then pretend to steal it, allowing Sultan to heroically "rescue" it and regain his master's favor.
The plan succeeded perfectly. The overjoyed farmer promised to care for Sultan for life.
Later, the wolf asked Sultan to turn a blind eye if he stole a sheep. Sultan refused, remaining loyal to his master. When the wolf tried to steal a sheep anyway, Sultan warned the farmer, who drove the wolf away. Enraged, the wolf challenged Sultan to a duel.
For the duel, Sultan's only ally was a three-legged cat. As they approached the meeting place, the wolf and his second, a boar, mistook the cat's upright tail for a sword and its limping for picking up stones to throw. Terrified, the boar hid in the bushes and the wolf climbed a tree.
The cat, spotting the boar's moving ear, thought it was a mouse and pounced, biting it hard. The boar squealed and ran away, shouting that the guilty one was in the tree. The wolf, ashamed of his cowardice, came down and made peace with Sultan.
