The One-Eyed Stag |

English Original

A stag, blind in one eye, was grazing near the seashore. He kept his good eye turned toward the land to watch for the approach of hounds, while his blind eye faced the sea, never suspecting danger from that direction.

However, some sailors sailing along the coast spotted him and shot an arrow, mortally wounding him. As he lay dying, he said to himself, "Wretch that I am! I was mindful of the dangers from the land, which did not assail me, but I feared no peril from the sea, and from there my ruin has come."
