The Tale of the Sun |

English Original

A long time ago, the Earth was in darkness, lit only by the moon and stars. Giant animals roamed the land, including Dinewan the Emu and Bralagah the Brolga.

One day, after a quarrel, Bralagah angrily grabbed one of Dinewan's large eggs and hurled it into the sky. It landed on a pile of firewood, and its yolk burst into brilliant flames, lighting up the world.

A good spirit in the sky saw this beautiful light and decided to create it every day. He began collecting wood each night. When enough was gathered, his friend the Morning Star would appear as a signal. But how to wake the sleeping world? As he pondered, a loud laugh echoed in the distance.

"Gugurrgaagaa, gugurrgaagaa!"

It was the call of the kookaburra. The spirit was overjoyed. He had found his alarm.

Now, every dawn across Australia, the laugh of Gugurrgaagaa the Kookaburra rings out, heralding the new day.
