A lion and an ass became hunting partners. They came upon a cave inhabited by wild goats. The lion positioned himself at the cave's entrance, waiting to ambush the goats as they emerged. Meanwhile, the ass went inside and brayed loudly to frighten the goats out into the open.
The lion struck down each goat as it fled. When the cave was empty, the ass came out and boasted, "Well, I scared them out quite effectively, didn't I?"
"Indeed you did," replied the lion. "If I hadn't known you were an ass, I would have been frightened and run away myself."
