A dog and a cock were traveling together as good friends. When night fell, the cock flew up into a tree to sleep, while the dog found a hollow in the same tree and settled there for the night.
At daybreak, the cock woke up and began to crow. A hungry fox heard the crowing and decided to make the cock his dinner. The fox called out, "What a beautiful morning! I'd love to talk to you. You have such a sweet voice. Won't you come down and chat with me?"
"Thank you, Mr. Fox," replied the cock. "But why don't you come up here instead? It's very nice and cool."
"All right, I will," said the fox. "But how can I get up?"
"Just go around the trunk below me," said the cock, "and wake my servant in the hollow. He will open the door for you."
As the fox approached the hollow, the dog rushed out, sprang upon him, and killed him at once.
