Narcissus |

English Original

Long ago in Greece, there lived a young shepherd named Narcissus. He spent his days tending his flock on the hills, searching for the best pastures.

One day, he came to a clear stream to drink. As he waited for his sheep, he saw his own reflection in the water for the first time. He was so captivated by his likeness that he gazed at it for a long time, completely forgetting his sheep.

The sheep waited, but eventually wandered away and were lost. Jupiter, the great god, was angry with Narcissus for his neglect and decided to punish him. As Narcissus finally turned from his reflection, he found his feet had taken root. He could not move or lift his head, and had to keep it bowed.

Gradually, he transformed into the flower we know as the narcissus. This is why we often find this dainty flower growing by streams, its beautiful head forever hung down.
