English Original
Once upon a time, there were two sisters. One was rich but childless; the other was a poor widow with five children, so destitute that she could no longer feed her family. In desperation, she went to her rich sister and pleaded, "My children and I are starving. You are rich; please give us a mouthful of bread."
The wealthy sister was heartless. "I have nothing in the house," she said harshly, and drove her poor sister away. Later, when the rich woman's husband returned home and tried to cut a loaf of bread, red blood flowed from the first cut.
Terrified, the wife confessed what she had done. Her husband rushed to aid the widow and her children. Upon entering their room, he found the widow praying, her two youngest in her arms and the three eldest lying dead. He offered food, but she replied, "We no longer desire earthly food. God has satisfied the hunger of three of us, and He will heed our supplications as well." No sooner had she spoken than the two little ones drew their last breath. Her heart broke, and she sank down dead.
