Five Months Older |

English Original

The Second World War had begun, and John wanted to join the army. However, he was only 16 years old, and the rule required boys to be over 18 to enlist. When the army doctor examined him, John claimed he was 18.

John's brother had joined the army just a few days earlier and had been examined by the same doctor. Remembering the older boy's family name, the doctor was surprised when he saw John's papers.

"How old are you?" he asked.

"Eighteen, sir," said John.

"But your brother was eighteen, too," said the doctor. "Are you twins?"

"Oh, no, sir," said John, his face turning red. "My brother is five months older than I am."
