A new priest, feeling nervous about hearing confessions, asks an experienced priest to observe his sessions. After hearing a few confessions, the older priest asks the novice to step aside for some advice.
The older priest demonstrates: "Cross your arms over your chest and rub your chin with one hand." The new priest follows the instruction.
Then the mentor suggests, "Try using phrases like 'I see,' 'Yes,' 'Go on,' 'I understand,' and 'How did you feel about that?'" The new priest practices these responses.
Finally, the older priest remarks, "Now, don't you think that's a little better than saying, 'Whoa... What happened next?'"
