A young mother believed it was wrong to waste food when so many people were hungry. One evening, while giving her young daughter a snack before bed, she offered her a slice of fresh brown bread with butter. The child, however, said she didn't want it like that and asked for jam as well.
Her mother looked at her for a moment and said, "When I was a little girl like you, Lucy, I was always given either bread and butter, or bread and jam, but never bread with butter and jam."
Lucy looked at her mother with pity in her eyes and said kindly, "Aren't you pleased that you've come to live with us now?"
