Borley Rectory was reputed to be the most haunted house in the UK. It was built in 1863 by Reverend Henry D.E. Bull near the River Stour in Essex to house his large family. The rectory burned down under mysterious circumstances in 1939.
It is believed the site was destined for hauntings due to its long history. The land once held a 12th-century church and other buildings. Foundations revealed underground tunnels and vaulted rooms. The rectory itself was a three-story building with about twenty rooms.
The most popular legend dates to 1362, when Benedictine monks built a monastery on the site. A local story tells of a nun from a nearby convent who fell in love with a monk. They planned to elope with the help of a coachman but were captured. The monk was hanged, the coachman beheaded, and the nun was allegedly walled up alive within the vaults. Their ghosts are said to haunt the location to this day.
