The gorillas in the southern valleys lived in groups of several dozen. They were fond of wine and even fonder of imitating human behavior.
People, well aware of their habits, often placed wine or distiller's grains by the roadside, alongside many straw sandals tied together with ropes.
The gorillas recognized this as a trick to lure them into a trap. "Hmph!" they cursed. "Do you think we don't know your tricks? We'll never be taken in!"
So they called to one another and turned to leave.
But the aroma of the wine had already reached them, and they couldn't bear to part with it. Even as they walked away, they kept looking back. Seeing no one around, they would turn back; then, fearing deception, they would leave again. After much hesitation, they finally reasoned with themselves: "Just a taste. It won't matter as long as we don't get drunk."
Soon, they all agreed to return and drink the wine. Once drunk, they forgot everything. Each gorilla put on the straw sandals and tried to walk like humans.
As a result, they stumbled and fell one after another, and were all captured alive.
