Once upon a time, there was a man who did nothing but gamble, so people called him Gambling Hansel. He gambled away his house and all his possessions.
The day before his creditors were to take his house, the Lord and St. Peter came and asked for shelter. Hansel agreed but said he could offer no bed or food. The Lord insisted, saying they would buy their own food. St. Peter gave Hansel three groschen to fetch bread.
On the way, Hansel passed a gambling den. His old companions called him in, and he gambled away the three groschen. When he returned late, he lied that the money had fallen into a gutter. The Lord knew the truth. St. Peter gave him another three groschen, and this time Hansel bought the bread.
The Lord then asked for wine. Hansel claimed the casks were empty, but the Lord told him to check the cellar. Reluctantly, Hansel went and, to his surprise, found the best wine flowing. They spent the night there.
The next morning, the Lord granted Hansel three wishes. Instead of asking for Heaven, Hansel wished for: 1) a pack of cards that would always win, 2) dice that would always win, and 3) a magical fruit tree from which no one could descend without his permission. The Lord granted these wishes and left.
With his magical items, Hansel quickly won half the world. Alarmed, St. Peter suggested sending Death to stop him. When Death came, Hansel tricked him into climbing the magical tree and trapped him there for seven years, during which no one died.
St. Peter and the Lord then went themselves. The Lord commanded Hansel to release Death, which he did. Death immediately took Hansel's life.
In the afterlife, Hansel was turned away from Heaven and Purgatory. Hell let him in, where he found only Lucifer and some crooked devils. Hansel immediately gambled with Lucifer and won all his devils.
Hansel then led his devil crew to Heaven's gates and began prying them open with a pole. Fearing Heaven would be destroyed, St. Peter convinced the Lord to let Hansel in.
Once inside Heaven, Hansel started gambling again, creating chaos. Finally, St. Peter and the Lord threw him out. Hansel's soul shattered into pieces, which entered all the gambling vagabonds who live to this day.
